Lower Paxton Township, Pennsylvania — Rogette Harris, 44, of Hershey, faces a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge and other offenses after “blacking out” at the wheel, causing an afternoon crash on Interstate 83 South and fleeing the scene, according to a criminal complaint filed in June.

Harris reportedly fled the scene of the accident prior to police arrival, around 1:45 p.m. on May 13. A responding officer reported that he witnessed the crash scene, while en route, and saw Harris get into the driver’s seat of her blue Honda SUV.

When police arrived they learned that a dump truck was reportedly struck by Harris’ SUV, and that she failed to exchange any insurance information, then left the scene. A witness provided the license plate number of Harris’ vehicle to police.

Police indicated they “canvassed” the area, but to no avail; they followed with a NCIC query and learned the vehicle belonged to Harris. Harris was found by police the next day at her home address.

Police observed fresh damage on Harris’ SUV and red paint transferred from the victim’s dump truck. Harris admitted to police that she hit the dump truck, but she could not describe the crash, only stating that she “blacked out.”

Charges were filed in June at the office of: Magisterial District Judge Judge William C. Wenner.  Harris’ Preliminary Hearing is set for Aug. 21 at Wenner’s office. In connection with the May 13 crash, Harris also faces three summary charges, including Careless Driving and Failing to Provide Information.

Harris is currently the elected Auditor of Derry Township and is seeking re-election in November. She is also currently serving as Dauphin County Democrat Committee (DCDC) Chairwoman.

Harris is now being represented by criminal defense attorney Katy McShane who is also currently campaigning for elected office. McShane will appear on the November ballot for Dauphin County judge.
